Request AppointmentDr. Upendra Kaul is one of India's most eminent interventional cardiologists and an internationally acclaimed clinician-scientist with over 40 years of distinguished experience in cardiovascular medicine. Renowned for pioneering advanced cardiac interventions in India, he has made landmark contributions to patient care, clinical research, medical education, and healthcare innovation.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Kaul has personally performed 15,000+ coronary angioplasties and complex cardiovascular interventions, making him one of Asia's most experienced interventional cardiologists. His clinical expertise encompasses complex coronary artery disease, structural heart disease, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension, transcatheter valve therapies (TAVR), pacemaker and ICD implantation, and advanced intravascular imaging.
A globally recognised leader in cardiovascular research, Dr. Kaul has contributed to more than 100 Phase I–IV international clinical trials as a National Lead Investigator, Steering Committee Member, DSMB Chair, and Global Scientific Advisor. He is best known for leading the landmark TUXEDO-India Trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), which influenced international guidelines for the treatment of diabetic patients undergoing coronary stenting and established India as a producer of world-class cardiovascular evidence.
Dr. Kaul has authored 700+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, book chapters, and academic papers in prestigious journals including NEJM, JACC, JAMA Cardiology, EuroIntervention, and the Indian Heart Journal. He is a regular faculty member and invited speaker at leading global cardiology meetings such as TCT, EuroPCR, AsiaPCR, and INDIA LIVE.
Beyond his clinical and research achievements, Dr. Kaul has played a pivotal role in developing cardiovascular medicine in India by establishing cardiac catheterisation laboratories, electrophysiology services, and research departments at premier institutions. He has mentored over 400 cardiologists and continues to shape the future of cardiovascular medicine through education and research.
As Founder Director of the Gauri Kaul Foundation, he has championed equitable access to cardiac care through community heart centres, telecardiology, mobile heart clinics, preventive screening programmes, and public health initiatives across underserved regions of Jammu & Kashmir. His mission, "No More Heart Attacks," reflects his commitment to making quality cardiac care accessible to every patient.
