Department of Ophthalmology was established in the year 1985 to provide super specialized eye care facilities at Batra Hospital, all under one roof. At the eye department, our highly trained Ophthalmologists are striving to achieve the best possible visual results for you.
The Ophthalmology Department offers comprehensive state of the art services with most sophisticated infrastructure & human resources, extending services to all the Ophthalmic sub-specialities like cataract, cornea, vitreo-retina, refractive surgery, glaucoma, squint, occuloplasty, Neuro-ophthalmology, Paediatric Ophthalmology, trauma, contact lenses, Opticals etc.
The prominent eye diseases that are being handled with the state of the art technology include:
ANTERIOR SEGMENT
- Cataract
Normal human lens is clear and transmits light and images of external world to the retina. Cataract is part of ageing process in which the lens becomes cloudy leading to blurry vision. There are no medications available which can dissolve the cataract. However it can be removed and replaced with an Intra ocular lens[IOL] implant.
We at Batra Hospital routinely perform stitchless cataract surgery with insertion of foldable IOL through a small incision (2.0mm) by cold phacoemulsification technology, using the latest generation Sovereign compact whitestar [AMO Inc, USA] Phacoemulsification, under VISU 150 [Zeiss, Germany] operating microscope. This helps patients in rapid recovery.
- Refractive Errors
Myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism are treated with spectacles and contact lenses. Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis i.e. LASIK, C-LASIK & EPILASIK are the latest procedures to get rid of glasses.
All patients undergo computerized eye testing with autorefractometer and autokeratometer [Topcon, Japan] for accurate measurements of the refractive errors.
- Glaucoma
Is a slow painless disease destroying eyesight due to increase in eye pressure. We can assess and document it with state of the art computerized Visual Field Analyser [Humphrey, USA] Goldmann Applanation Tonometer [Haag Streit, Switzerland] and CT-80 Non-Contact Tonometer (Topcon, Japan).
Glaucoma is treated with eye drops, oral medications, laser iridotomy with ndYAG Laser [Zeiss, Germany].
Surgical management of glaucoma is undertaken by performing trabeculectomy. Patients suffering from both glaucoma and cataract are treated by perfoming Phaco-Trab, i.e. phacoemusification and trabeculectomy combined.
POSTERIOR SEGMENT
At Batra Hospital we have the state of the art digital Fundus Imaging System [ Topon, Japan] for computerized Fundus Fluorescein Angiography. With this we can assess and document various retinal and uveal conditions including the manifestations of Diabetic, Hypertensive and Anaemic Retinopathy. Based on this information we can treat them with LASER Photocoagulation using the IRIS 532 nm Green Laser. In patients with hazy media we can assess the retinal and vitreous relationship with GE and Siemens B Scan Ultrasonography and Colored Doppler.
We have state of the art facilities to carry out various vitreoretina surgical procedures. These include Scleral Buckling procedure for retinal detachment surgery, Pars plana vitrectomy for vitreous hemorrhage, complex retinal detachment, removal of epiretinal membrane/ foreign body/ dropped lens, macular hole surgery and complex vitreoretinal procedures, including management of traumatized eyes. All vitreoretina surgical procedures are carried out with DORC [DORC, Holland] Vitrectomy Machine, Iris 532 nm. Laser with all three modes of deliveries (slit lamp, indirect and endolaser) and the other requisite ancillary equipment.
Management of Age Related Macular Degeneration is done with PDT (Photodynamic Therapy), TTT (Transpupillary Thermo Therapy), Intravitreal injections and removal of subretinal membrane.
PEDIATRIC EYE DISEASES AND SQUINT CORRECTION
We have the expertise and the equipment to manage cross-eyed children, blocked tear ducts, congenital cataract and premature babies having Retinopathy of prematurity.
OPHTHALMIC PLASTIC SURGERY
Various conditions like Ptosis, Ectopion, Entropion and lid deformities due to trauma, burns and those that are congenital can be managed well at our hospital
