Batra Hospital's Microsurgeon with his team reconstructed the amputated fingers of a village girl

A 22 year old female, Sarita was referred by Dr. Niraj Agarwal, surgeon in Bhuwal Hospital to Dr. Vipul Sud, Microsurgeon at Batra Hospital, New Delhi on Monday 31/08/09 morning when her fingers of left hand were completely amputated by a ‘gandasa’. The accident happened at 9 am in a Bhogipur village, Haryana. She was told to preserve the amputated part in a clean polythene bag and keep the bag in ice with little bit of water. After giving first aid and controlling bleeding by pressure, she was sent by Dr. Niraj to Dr. Vipul Sud at Batra Hospital & Medical Research Centre.

She reached at 12 o’clock in the afternoon and after doing preliminary investigations, she was taken up for surgery at 1:30 pm by Dr. Vipul Sud, microsurgeon & his team and Anaesthesia team was headed by Dr. Pavan Gurha. Under microscope, the wound was cleaned up and the nerves and vessels were dissected in the hand and the amputated fingers. After removing all the devitalized tissues, the bones were fixed with wires. Then the tendous were repaired.

The arteries were connected with the help of vein graft taken from other hand using sutures which cannot be seen by naked eye . Then the veins were connected with same sutures (cannot be seen by naked eye) and the nerves were repaired. All the fingers at the end of operation warmed up and are working.

The operation finished at 12:30 in the night. She was kept for 2 days in Surgical Intensive Care Unit for monitoring. 5 days after surgery, the patient is happy on seeing her intact fingers and grateful.
