Batra Hospital, New Delhi, March 17, 2012: Batra Hospital in association with Glaucoma Society of India (GSI) is celebrating Glaucoma Awareness Week from March 11- 17, 2012 at its Department of Ophthalmology under the expertise of senior ophthalmologists and their team.
What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is a silent, slowly blinding disease of the eye in which the intra ocular pressure increases. The patient is not aware of the damage to the optic nerve of the eye as the disease is usually asymptomatic. Majority of the cases develop the disease slowly and the patient is usually not aware of the gradual loss of sight until vision is significantly impaired. It can lead to total blindness if not diagnosed and treated at early stage. It is important for the following type of people to have a regular glaucoma screening, if they: • age more than 40 years • have a family history of glaucoma • have a history of Diabetes Mellitus • are on long term steroid treatment
