PRESS RELEASE

Batra Hospital celebrates Glaucoma Awareness Week

Batra Hospital, New Delhi, March 17, 2012: Batra Hospital in association with Glaucoma Society of India (GSI) is celebrating Glaucoma Awareness Week from March 11- 17, 2012 at its Department of Ophthalmology under the expertise of senior ophthalmologists and their team.

What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a silent, slowly blinding disease of the eye in which the intra ocular pressure increases. The patient is not aware of the damage to the optic nerve of the eye as the disease is usually asymptomatic. Majority of the cases develop the disease slowly and the patient is usually not aware of the gradual loss of sight until vision is significantly impaired. It can lead to total blindness if not diagnosed and treated at early stage. It is important for the following type of people to have a regular glaucoma screening, if they:
• age more than 40 years
• have a family history of glaucoma
• have a history of Diabetes Mellitus
• are on long term steroid treatment

“While celebrating the Glaucoma Awareness Week at Batra Hospital, we are screening the patients by doing full eye examination including measuring of eye pressure, examination of the retina, optic nerve and computerized visual field analysis, says Dr. Nita Gurha, Senior Consultant, Department of Ophthalmology, Batra Hospital And Medical Research Centre, New Delhi.
