Why does my baby have loose stools at age of 7 months? Is it because of teething?

Why does my 2 months old baby boy cry every evening for about 2-3 hours?
This condition is called evening colic and it is basically an adaptation of the baby to the environment. Please Contact your doctor if it continues.


I have a 2 months old baby who is breast-fed. She cries within 15-20 minutes after feeding. What is wrong with him?
Relax, the probable reason for the excessive crying is your baby is hungry and not getting enough feed you must consult your doctor who will check out the weight gain pattern and advice accordingly.


What is Deviated Nasal Septum and when surgery for it is required?

The bone in the midline in noses is called septum. It may be deviated mildly in almost 70% of populations. If it is causing symptoms like nasal blockage or sinusitis, it needs surgical correction. It should not be operated before the age of 18, if it is operated at early age patient may need revision surgery at a later date.


How the surgery for nasal polyposis is done and what are the chances of recurrence?

Nasal polyposis is a very common nasal problem. Surgery for it is done using nasal endoscopies. It is called Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. In a nicely done case and if proper care is taken in post operative period the risk of recurrence is minimal almost less than 25%.


What should be done for bleeding from nose?

  • These are multiple causes for bleeding from nose, but commonly in children and adults it may be infection while in elderly patients high blood pressure may be the cause.
  • Patient should lie down and apply cold compresses on face. He should report to casualty in the hospital at the earliest.


How hoarseness of voice is managed in adults?

Change in the voice in adults may be due to:

  • Vocal abuse (voice strain)
  • Or Vocal cord movements being less
  • Or growth on the vocal cords

Any change in the voice lasting for more than 15 days should be considered seriously and a detail workup like x-ray chest and direct laryngoscopy should be done.


What are the effects of perforation of Ear Drum?

  • Because of perforation in ear drum infection may spread from outer canal to middle ear and mastoid bone.
  • A perforation causes hearing loss and discharge from the ear.
  • Medication will control the ear discharge for the time being but unless the perforation is closed by surgery (Tympanoplasty) it will never heal completely.
  • If the infection spreads to the mastoid bone surgery should be done as early as possible. Otherwise it may become life threatening situation.


Child who is 18 month old and has not started speaking.

  • Child needs hearing tests.
  • Brain stem Evolk Response Audiogram needs to be done to rule out hearing loss.
  • If hearing is normal and neurologically there is no deficit, child will start speaking.
  • If BERA is abnormal, child will need some more investigations.


How should we clean the ear of a child?
Normally no cleaning is required. Ear canalis shape is such that any dust or wax will come out on its own.


2 years old child has swallowed a Foreign Body (Coin-Peanut) apparently child is normal except mild coughing.
Rush to the hospital. Get x-ray chest done. It may have to repeated after few hours.


4 years old child has started getting sore throat very frequently.

At this age child normally gets this problem. He may need antibiotics frequently. These episodes become less after the age of 5½ - 6 years. If still persisting with same problem consult ENT surgeon.


Child had sore throat and cold which has recovered but he has developed hearing loss.

This may be due to fluid in the ear infections like Tympanogram may be required to assess. Child may need a minor surgery.


4 years old child has developed stammering and speech is not clear.

Child needs speech therapy. Consult speech therapist.


6 years old child keep his mouth open and makes noise during sleep.

It may be due to Adenoid enlargement and may need surgery consult ENT surgeon.
