Padma Bhushan & Padma Shri Dr. Ramesh Kumar is the first ever Indian Member of Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in kidney diseases who holds the singular distinction of starting haemodialysis and kidney transplantation in Northern India. A pioneer of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), Dr. Kumar is renowned for his notable and continued contributions towards society and invaluable research interests and achievements in the field of Renal Medicine.
Having worked with Late (Dr.) Mary G. McGeown at Queen’s University, N. Ireland and Sir Professor H.E. deWardener at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, London, Dr. Kumar has the distinction of starting the artificial kidney program including kidney transplantation at AIIMS. His initiative and vision in establishing the training program of medical, technical and nursing personnel in Nephrology have contributed in expansion of kidney care in India. The transplant program in North India has grown with him. Dr. Kumar continues to be an active member for international and national nephrology socieites and has the distinction of being personal physician to noted Indian and global political and business dignitaries He has vast scientific publications, chapters in books and monographs to his credit and is member of various scientific committees.
Dr. Kumar has been the guiding force for creation of dialysis centers across Northern India. His relentless crusade of 20 years for the Artificial Organ Transplant Act was passed by the Parliament in May 1994.
He obtained worldwide recognition for identification of Cytotoxic drug – Cyclophosphamide induced sterility. His endeavours continue with public education programs for kidney diseases and showcasing India abroad as center of excellence for world-class kidney care. He continues to lead the fraternity of nephrologists in the field.
Presently, Dr. Kumar continues his busy schedule working for patient care, kidney transplantation, clinical research, higher education and teaching in Nephrology at the state of art facility for the care of kidney patients at Batra Hospital, New Delhi.
